Street Evangelism

Dear reader, if you are a true believer, take a moment to reflect on what contributed towards your Christianity today. Though each Christian has a unique story of the pathway to God, it is important to acknowledge that it was not us who found Him, but He who found us. “For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost” (Luke 19:10 NKJV). Aside from Him, we would have perished as sinners and enemies of God due to our inclination towards evil. No personal merit or number of good deeds could have cleansed us from the transgressions to save from God’s righteous judgment. But a time came when the Gospel reached our ears, and God’s love called us to repentance and subdued the proud heart. We put our faith in the Lord Jesus Christ and surrendered our personal lives into His hands.

What we must remember is that the Gospel did not reach us by chance. Over a period of 2000 years, millions of Christians sacrificed their lives in order to fulfill the great commission of their Savior, who said, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature” (Mark 16:15 NKJV). The early Christian missionaries traveled to foreign nations to proclaim to people the words of salvation, despite the threat of martyr’s death. By virtue of such faithful followers, evangelism was spread to the Slavic nations as well, and today there are countless churches throughout the world which are comprised of Christians who share the Russian language as their native tongue.

With that in mind, we must bear the responsibility to continue the evangelical ministry within our generation. Millions of people around us are perishing and suffering from their sins! The cities of America are in dire need of the preaching of Gospel, just as the gentiles and the Slavic nations were 1000 years ago. The stakes are high – either eternal salvation or judgment and damnation of multitudes of people.

Conscious of this truth, the local Christian youth gather from various churches in Portland to take a stand and preach the gospel in the city center every Saturday. They read aloud words from the Bible, sing hymns, and distribute brochures written in several languages, as well as hold personal discussions with listeners and pray for them. The street ministry is highly supported by the “New Life” center rehabilitation students who have completed, or are successfully undergoing the program. Once governed by the drug and alcohol dependency, today, the renewed young men and women hold Bibles in their hands and proclaim Jesus as Christ! We would be pleased to share more of our diverse experience of spreading the gospel, as well as provide free samples of the evangelical brochures written in English, Spanish, Russian, Ukrainian, and other languages.
